About

Maciej Derulski

Hi! I’m a full stack developer in the Toronto area with diverse skills that stem from a deep understanding of digital technology.

The journey began in 1991 with an 80386 PC boasting a whopping 25 MHz CPU and MS-DOS. I was a 9 year old using the command line.

I was introduced to programming in high school and instantly developed a deep interest for it. The idea of being able to make a computer do anything I please was astounding.

I have a fascination with code that runs deep, stopping at nothing short of excellence. Curiosity and experimentation is what drives me. Figuring it out gets me animated.

Outside the coding world, I’m an avid skier and camper. During the summer it’s not uncommon that I end up sleeping in the woods under a tarp with my rucksack. Then when the snow hits the ground my attention shifts to finding the best powdered glades to ski down. Nothing beats spending time in the great outdoors.

Work

With over 5 years of agency experience, I’ve refined my skills to be able to deliver quality code under quick turnaround situations. Always an invaluable resource able to complete complex technical solutions on budget and time, often under aggressive timelines. I built a reputation as a top performer with a wide skill set that extends beyond writing code. Strong communication skills, a deep understanding of design principles, and a utilitarian approach that always made me the most requested tech resource at both FCV and Maclaren McCann. In December 2014 I was the winner of the McCann people’s choice – “Creative Wizard” award.

Prior to my time in the agency world, I worked as a freelance developer. I provided services for small businesses, politicians, and non-profit organizations. The diversity of roles assumed has provided me with the experience to understand the entire process from project acquisition to final delivery.

Education

In 2008 I decided to return to school and enrolled into the “Digital Enterprise Management” undergrad program at the University of Toronto. Offered through the Institute of Communication, Culture, and Information Technology, it focuses on digital media, communication, the integration of the Web and technology into business, while considering the unique management challenges of digital businesses. During my time at the university I played a key role in founding and establishing UTM/TV as a self sustained organization within the university network. The organization continues to operate under a new generation of students. During my third and fourth year I was a Teaching Assistant at Sheridan College for an introductory Web design course during the lab portion. I created new content and weekly hands-on assignments that would be marked for completion. In 2012 I graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree.
